The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region IX Zamboanga Peninsula plays host to the Philippine- East ASEAN Growth Area (P-EAGA) Environment Cluster 2nd Semester meeting on December 1-2, 2022 at Palacio del Sur, Zamboanga City.
DENR IX In Charge, Office of the Regional Executive Director Ronald D. Gadot was at hand to welcome the delegates and provided a brief historical presentation about Zamboanga City.
Assistant Secretary for Field Operations in Western Mindanao Arleigh J. Adorable in his inspirational message challenged the delegates to come out with actions to achieve the Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines β East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) vision and mission focusing on three main outcomes and these are: developing a competitive and βgreenβ manufacturing sector that can add value to production; creating sustainable, competitive and climate-resilient agriculture and fishing industries; and adopting a multi-country approach to tourism that benefits less developed areas.
βThese actions and activities must be in line with the thrust of our department on climate change, align all programs to BIMP-EAGA, promote local ecotourism to earn more revenues and collaborate with other government agencies to boost our effortsβ, ASEC Adorable added.
Deputy Head for the P-EAGA Environment Cluster and DENR 11 Regional Executive Director Bagani Fidel A. Evasco, who presided the meeting, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the host region for their very warm reception and hospitality. He noted that the P-EAGA regions are well represented and began outlining the agenda of the meeting. Lastly, he said that there is a need for the delegates to work hand in hand to narrow down the gaps and help achieve the vision of the BIMP-EAGA.
The meeting was a success as the delegates were able to present and discuss the updates on the following topics: Carbon Sequestration Study; Promotion of Clean and Green production practices for SMEs; Greenhouse Gases Inventory; Mangrove Ecotourism; Promotion of Best Practices on farming, fishing and ecotourism; Turtle Islands Heritage Protected Area (TIHPA); and Green City Action Plan of General Santos City.
In closing, Planning and Policy Director Melinda Capistrano thank everybody for a very successful meeting and that all actions and decisions made were properly documented and will be presented to top management for their consideration.
The next day, the delegates visited Pasonanca Natural Park and Great and Little Santa Cruz Island Protected Landscape and Seascape to observe good practices on ecotourism.

Gadot, from Region 10 headed by RED Henry Adornado, Region 11 headed by RED Bagani Fidel A. Evasco, Region 12, Region 13 headed by RED Nonito Tamayo, Region IV-B, BARRM-MENRE, LGU of General Santos City, Environment Management Bureau Regional Directors from all concerned regions, and Planning and Management Division Chiefs from all concerned regions.
