At least 500 people participated in a mangrove planting and cleanup in Barangay Sugod, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur in celebration of Earth Day 2022 with the theme, “Invest In Our Planet.”
Almost 200 sacks of garbage were collected by the participants mostly composed of sachets, face masks, plastic bottles, diapers, nets, etc., which were collected by the LGU of Tukuran for proper segregation and disposal.
The activities were organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources IX together with its line bureaus and field offices, and in coordination with the Local Government Units of the Municipality of Tukuran and Barangay Sugod. Other participants include officials, personnel and representatives from the 1st Cav Battalion, Armor Division, Philippine Army, 53rd Infantry Matapat Battalion, PA, 62nd Philippine Air Force Reserve, 901st Community Defense Center, 9th RCDG, ARESCOM, APC Western Mindanao, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology IX, Inner Wheel Club of Yllana Bay, JCI Greater Pagadian, JCI Yllana, JHCSC Tukuran, Katipunan Bank, Philippine National Police – Zamboanga del Sur, Philippine Statistics Authority IX, Tactical Operations Group 9, PAF.
Ronald D. Gadot, DENR IX’s In-charge of the Office of the Regional Executive Director and ARD for Technical Services, said that the rich mangrove ecosystems in Sugod, Tukuran should be protected and conserved as such ecosystems not only house important fish and other species for food, provide livelihood as an ecotourism area but it also protects the community against environmental calamaties such as storm surges.
Every year on April 22, countries around the world celebrate Earth Day, which marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
