For the second time this year a Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius Syrichta) has been rescued and released in Zamboanga del Norte.
Ms. Cheenee Cagbabanua, a resident of Barangay San Pedro, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte, rescued a Philippine Tarsier locally known as “Basing” when she saw that children were playing with the wildlife. She immediately reported it to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Piñan.
CENRO Piñan Quick Response Team (QRT) responded right away and upon assessment the tarsier was identified as female, had a measurement of 8.5 cm in length, it’s tail is 14 cm and limbs is 5.2 cm long. It was immediately released at Jose Rizal Memorial Protected Landscape, in Talisay, Dapitan City.
It can be remembered that last April a mother-infant Philippine Tarsier was released by Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region IX (DENR IX) thru its CENRO Manukan in Zamboanga del Norte.
In 2008 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Assessment classified the Philippine Tasier as Near Threatened species due to the significant decline of its population. One of the factor to its decline is the lost of its habitat due to deforestation.
Furthermore, DENR IX reminds everyone that possession of wildlife without a permit is punishable under Republic Act 9147 otherwise known as the " Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act"
