The DENR-CENRO Kabasalan rescued a Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis), a migratory bird categorized as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at Barangay La Paz, Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay. The bird is banded with a yellow flag at the right tibia that was inscribed with "E1" and a ring on the left tarsus with "INFORM WILDLIFE GPO BOX 8 CANBERRA 2601 AUSTRALIA 091-20737 August 9, 2009, near Broome, NW, Australia.
The bird is kept at the PENRO Zamboanga Sibugay Wildlife Holding Facility for further observation and health assessment before its release back to the wild.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Region IX is currently conducting an Information, Education and Communication campaign on Vulnerability Risk Assessment (VRA-IEC) in the Municipality of Tabina, Zamboanga del Sur.
The said activity is under the National Geohazard Assessment and Mapping Program of the DENR-MGB to increase awareness and provide additional technical input to the concerned Local Government Unit (LGU) regarding the Risk Exposure Analysis and its importance to attain sustainable development through Comprehensive Land-Use, Development, and Disaster Risk Management Planning. Target municipalities also include Dimataling, Vincenzo Sagun and Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur and Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay for Fiscal Year 2021.
Zamboanga del Sur.. Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) of Ramon Magsaysay personnel released 41 Olive Ridley Turtle hatchlings off the coastal area of Barangay Bulanit, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur on May 14,2021.
The release came after Mr. Jason M. Placido, a resident of the said Barangay saw the marine turtle hatching and immediately reported it to Barangay councilor Mr. Taha P. Ayunan, who then informed CENRO RM for proper documentation and disposition.
The hatchling nested in the said Barangay last March 22,2021.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified Olive Ridley turtles as vulnerable at a global state due to multiple treats to its population.

Continuing its mission in implementing a more intensified campaign on Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, the DENR-EMB IX has issued and implemented the closure orders to the different Local Government Units (LGUs) with Open Dumpsites in the region. Breakdown as follows; 3 Municipalities in Zamboanga Del Norte (Salug, Liloy and Manuel Roxas), 3 Municipalities in Zamboanga del Sur Province (Guipos, San Miguel and Tukuran) and 2 Municipalities in Zamboanga Sibugay Province (Kabasalan and Imelda).
