“Wetlands Action for People and Nature”, is the theme for this year’s World Wetlands Day. This highlights the importance of concerted actions in conserving and ensuring the sustainable use of wetlands for human beings, the environment, and all living creature that depends on wetlands.
In observance of this year’s World Wetlands Day, The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region IX together with its Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Zamboanga del Sur and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Guipos, held a one-day “Symposium of Wetland Conservation and Sustainable Use” in Dinas, Zamboanga del Sur on February 2, 2022. Simultaneously a mangrove propagule planting and clean-up activity was also conducted by the Community Environment and Natural Resources office (CENRO) of Ramon Magsaysay in Combo, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.
The symposium on wetland conservation and sustainable use was attended by around 60 selected barangay representatives from the Municipality of Dinas. Lectures on the importance of wetlands, fresh water ecosystem, caves, and protected areas establishment and management were discussed to the participants, in order for them to get a deeper understanding on the impacts and benefits of the natural resources around them.
The DENR IX team also conducted a bird watching activity in Barangays Sambulawan, Pisaan, Benuatan, and Songayan, Dinas, Zamboanga del Sur.
Meanwhile, the CENRO RM team planted an estimated 130 Bacauan (Rhizophora mucronata) propagules together with the leaders and residents of Barangay Combo. They also collected around 5 sacks of bio-gradable and non-biodegradable waste during the clean-up activity, which were sorted for proper disposal.
