Zamboanga del Norte… Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) of Siocon and Piñan conducted a simultaneous Mangrove propagule planting on February 2, 2022 in observance of World Wetlands Day with the theme “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”.
 
CENRO Siocon held their activity at the mangrove area of Barangay Bucana, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte. This location was strategically chosen as it is considered as a tsunami and storm surge prone area. The location has also been identified as wetland site for annual waterbird census. Approximately 700 propagules were planted by CENRO Siocon personnel and the Barangay tanods of the said Barangay.
 
Before the planting activity, a short Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign was conducted to explain to the attendees the important functions of mangroves in their community.
 
On the other hand, CENRO Piñan personnel together with the Maritime Police, Philippine Coast Guard Dapitan City and Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Libay planted an estimated 600 mangrove propagules in Barangay Libay, Sibutad, Zamboanga del Norte. Aside from the propagule planting, a coastal clean-up activity was also conducted by CENRO Piñan in Barangay Sawang, Sibutad, Zamboanga del Norte.
