Zamboanga del Sur.... the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Ramon Magsaysay personnel headed by CENR Officer For. Geofrey Zayas joined hands with the members of the Alpha Company of Philippine Army's 53rd Infantry "MATAPAT" Battalion (53IB) Sigapod Patrol Base, Special CAFGU Active Auxiliaries (SCAA), Sigapod Barangay Officials and members of People's Organization in the Simultaneous Bamboo Planting activity in commemoration of World Bamboo Day 2021 with this year's theme "Alay ng Bayan sa Inang Kalikasan, Kawayan!" at Barangay Sapa Butong, Sigapod, Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur on September 18, 2021.
A total of 100 Buntong Bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiflorus) culms were planted along the riverbanks of the Enhanced National Greening program (eNGP) site of Sigapod Watershed Farmers Association in Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur.
28 Participants who attended the activity were encouraged to plant bamboo culms for it plays an important role in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and can solve the incidence of riverbanks erosions.
The World Bamboo Day was created by Kamesh Salam in the year 2009 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok. He was the former president of the World Bamboo Organisation.
Since 2009, WBO has been celebrating International Bamboo Day to increase the awareness of bamboo in the world. To generate awareness about promoting the bamboo industry, 18 September was marked as World Bamboo Day.
