The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region IX in partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard conducted a series of activities to celebrate International Coastal Clean-up Day on September 18, 2021 at Aliguay Island, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.
The activities include a coastal clean-up, scubasura, and a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) campaign on the significance of the ocean and Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003).
This event aims to engage people to remove trash and debris from beaches, waterways, and other water bodies, to change their behaviors that cause pollution, to have a sense of responsibility, and to increase the level of awareness and solicit support and cooperation from the community.
52 participants representing the DENR 9 regional office, PENRO Zamboanga del Norte, Philippine Coast Guard, Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) of Piñan, Protected Area Management Office (PAMO), barangay officials headed by Aliguay Chairman Lyn Marie P. Evardo and residents attended the event.
A total of 112 kilograms or 18 sacks of wastes were collected consisting mostly of plastic bottles and other household wastes and brought to the Barangay Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for proper segregation and disposal.
The celebration of the 2021 International Coastal Clean-up Day is an annual event held every 3rd Saturday of September with this year's theme "Understand and Beat Marine Pollution".
