Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region IX led by its Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group (RSCIG) in coordination with its Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Liloy celebrated the Month of the Planet Earth with the theme: “Doing Our Fair Share to Restore the Earth” and Earth day 2021 by conducting a mangrove growing activity and Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on April 20 and 21 in Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte.
The DENR IX team jump-started the event with a mangrove growing activity in Villa C. Sudiacal, Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte which was participated by representatives from the SK Federation of Liloy and BJMP IX Liloy District Jail.
CENR Officer Dionisio D. Rago gave a brief orientation and explained the importance of mangroves. He said that, it is imperative that we take care of our mangroves as it is our first line of defense when it comes to storm surges and floods especially for our coastal communities.
A total of 200 Bacauan seedlings were planted by the team in the area.
Afterwards, an IEC campaign was conducted with the SK Federation of Liloy in which they were educated on various topic relating to protecting and conserving our environment and natural resources.
The day ended with a covenant signing between DENR IX and the SK Federation of Liloy which aims to forge a partnership between the two parties for the protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources.
On the second day, an IEC campaign was conducted with selected PWDs and senior citizens of Liloy wherein they were educated on more ways they can help in the protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources. Aside from the IEC campaign, the PWDs and senior citizens were also given a free manicure, pedicure and haircut.
Resource speakers for the two-day IEC campaign include Mines and Geosciences Bureau IX (MGB) Senior Geologist Mr. Ollyn Rey T. Balignot who talked about Geological Hazards such as landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis. Environment Management Bureau IX (EMB) Environment Monitoring Officer Mr. Manuel Su discussed about Solid Waste Management, CENRO Liloy Information Officer Glenda Combista on Biodiversity Conservation, DENR IX Information Officer II Ms. Winnielyn Abayon-Cariazo presented Climate Change and Single-Use Plastic and DENR IX Communication Development Officer I and Tayo Ang Kalikasan Alternate Focal Person Ms. Ilmeh Marie D. Enriquez lectured on the message behind the DENR tagline “Tayo Ang Kalikasan”.
SK Chairperson of Tiguma, Pagadian City Mr. Crisjohn S. Viray was also invited as guest speaker for the SK Federation as he shared best practices in managing solid waste.
Aside from the celebration of Month of the Planet Earth and Earth Day 2021, this event also aims to promote an inclusive approach in environmental conservation to the PWD and Senior Citizen sector.
