2 marine sea turtles were tagged and released by personnel from CENRO Piñan led by CENRO Adelaida R. Borja on November 15, 2023, at Barangay Banbanan, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte. This effort was achieved in collaboration with the Banbanan Local Government Unit and the Dapitan City Agriculture Office.

The Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) have a carapace measuring 68.15 cm (length) by 65 cm (width) and 71 cm (length) by 65 cm (width), respectively.

The journey of these sea turtles began when they were voluntarily handed over to the office of Dapitan City Agriculture by vigilant fishermen. Mr. Rudy Elcamel, a staff member of the said office, shared that the concerned fishermen discovered the sea turtles ensnared in a fish corral within the coastal area of Barangay Polo, Dapitan City, on October 15, 2023, around 3 O'clock in the afternoon.

The collaboration between local communities and governmental entities in this effort underscores the importance of community engagement in environmental endeavors aimed at safeguarding and preserving marine biodiversity.

This tagging and release event also stands as a beacon of hope for the future of Green Sea Turtles, symbolizing the positive outcomes achievable through collaborative conservation efforts. As these tagged turtles embark on their oceanic journey, they carry with them the hope of a healthier marine ecosystem.

The Department continuously asks the public to immediately report sightings/encounters with Green Sea turtles as they are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), making their protection and conservation crucial.
